I bought a B6100E (1980) along with a house. The tractor has some ideosyncracies. (so does the house, I suppose, but that's another board.) This is a 3 cyl 14 hp model with a 5 ft finishing mover. The previous owner apparently turned the key to 'off' rather than deal with the oil pressure light that comes on after about 20 minutes of work. The owner's manual suggests that one should expect to use water, but I go through quite a lot -- probably 1-2 quarts/hour. Is it likely that I'm overworking/overheating this engine? I suspect a new radiator is needed. Do they make a sealed cooling system for this model?
Or do I likely have a good enough excuse to convince my wife that I need a new B 2630?

The cooling system is a thermo-siphon sytem. On mine I had to take the radiator off and give it a good cleaning both inside and out. Also make sure your running 70-30 water/antifreeze.
What weight of oil are you running? For warmer weather I think the manual calls for a straight 30W.

Thanks for the info. Gives me some hope.
cleaning the radiator is on my list -- but I suspect I'll find that it is being held together with mineral deposits. I've tried various anti-freeze/water ratios. Nothing seems to help. The manual says 100% water in the summer. I'm running a synthetic blend (diesel rated) 10W30 oil. I was told the oil light has always come on. That doesn't exactly give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. My front yard is fairly steep (in spots I wouldn't dare attempt a turn) and I'm wondering if running a 5ft rear mower up the hill is asking too much of a 26 year-old 14hp engine.
This tractor is a bit more complicated than the gas-powered, air cooled, no hydrolic Economy tractor I grew up with. I really wish I'd had something like this back then. (warts and all) ....

I wouldn't use a 5'mower. Mine came with a 4' belly mower. If I remember right they were rated 48" finish and 42" rough cut.
As far as the oil light, I would change the oil to at least a 15w40 or try the straight 30w. Does yours stay on even at full throttle? You might check the sending unit or replace it with a gauge just to see where you're at. Mine comes on at idle after it warms up (10-15 min.) but will go out above 1/4 throttle.

That's the second time I've heard that 48" is the max mower size for this tractor. That would be one good reason to consider a more powerful tractor. I have around 30 hours since the last oil change, but I might go ahead and try 15w40 anyway. My oil light comes on at full throttle. Similar to yours, it comes on at lower speed after a few minutes, goes off if I increase thottle then comes on again in a few minutes until I speed up the engine more.... until the throttle is at full and the light is on.
I plan on having the tractor serviced by a local outfit that comes highly recommended, but they are swamped at this time of year, so I may have to wait a few weeks to take it in. ....

When those engines were designed they did not know what multi grade was or the design. Go for a straight weight 30 for summer use and if it is a good oil designed for farm duty or continual full throttle chances are the problem will go away. ....
